The Chestnut Forest Living Museum
Audio documentaries (podcasts) from intergenerational interviews. Children, taking on the role of journalists, record generational stories so that, no matter where you are, you can learn about the history of the Chestnut Forest of Agiasos through the narratives of the locals.
Visit Agiasos, in collaboration with the Folklore Museum of the Agiasos Reading Room, presents the initiative “The Chestnut Forest Living Museum” which aims to give a voice to the elderly people of Agiasos with the help of new technologies. Simultaneously, through meaningful contact and interaction with younger generations, specifically teenagers, the initiative provides an opportunity for both groups to acquire new skills and aims to promote the intangible and physical cultural heritage of Agiasos and the adjacent Chestnut Forest, for both the physical and digital visitors of the island.
The proposed action focuses on the natural environment in which the village has developed, which has ensured the prosperity and survival of its inhabitants throughout the centuries. The “Living Museum of Kastaniona” gives a voice to grandmothers and grandfathers, who will share their knowledge and tell their stories – stories that introduce the manners, customs, and daily habits of the place – thus passing the baton to the next generation, as the continuers of the region’s history.
Furthermore, the active participation of teenagers in the project, through a series of offered workshops, aims not only at cultivating new skills but also at preparing them to “inherit” the intangible cultural heritage of their place, which will become a common property, resulting in the new generation actively participating in the accurate recording, dissemination, and perhaps modernization and continuation of it.
The action is carried out with the subsidy and under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture in the actions of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The podcasts were made by the Image and Sound Laboratory of the Aegean University.
